6 tips to PREVENT cancer

MOST cancers can be prevented by following this advice.

1 Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Eat more legumes (peas and beans) and fibre. Reduce saturated fats and red meat, especially ‘well done’ grilled meats. Up to 40% of all cancers can be prevented by changes to the diet!
Being overweight increases the risk of cancer of the uterus.

2  Stop smoking. Smoking  causes one third of all cancers, including cancers of the lung, mouth, oesophagus, bladder and cervix. Breathing other people’s smoke also increases your cancer risk.

3  Exercise regularly to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Moderate exercise for half an hour on most days of the week is recommended.

4  Reduce exposure to the sun to prevent skin cancer. Wear protective clothing, a hat and use sunscreen. Try to avoid going outdoors between 10 am and 3 pm.

5  Avoid cancer-causing viruses. Most cancer of the cervix is caused by the human ‘papilloma’ (wart) virus. Avoid it by using condoms and have Pap tests every two years. Hepatitis B vaccination will prevent many cases of liver cancer.

6  Reduce alcohol. Alcohol increases the risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus and  liver. Men should drink no more than 4 drinks daily, women 2 daily.
