Are 'detox' diets good for my health?

Commercial detox kits combine herbal and nutritional supplements with dietary advice, for a period of 1-28 days. They claim to remove undesirable wastes and toxins from our bodies.

However, according to leading nutritionist Rosemary Stanton, there is no scientific evidence for any benefit from detoxing or any need for it. Our bodies are able to effectively remove waste. While a short session will not harm most people, longer courses can cause salt imbalance and dehydration.

Most people would be better off spending the money on a healthy lifestyle: a wholesome diet, regular exercise, no smoking, stress management and alcohol in moderation.
