Common myths about immunisation |
Vaccination is one of the most effective and proven ways to prevent disease in childhood. However, some people still have their doubts about it. Do you believe any of these old myths?
It weakens the immune system
WRONG. Vaccines actually strengthen the body’s defences by producing cells and chemicals which fight infection, in exactly the same way as the ‘natural infection’.
Common infections are not serious
WRONG. Common childhood infections can cause devastating complications and even death. For example, whooping cough can cause brain damage and fits. Measles kills over one million people each year in the world and can cause pneumonia, brain damage and ear infection.
Immunisation is unsafe
WRONG. Immunisation is generally extremely safe, even in the first few months of life. Although rare complications do sometimes occur, vaccination is many times safer than catching the disease.
Vaccines are not very effective
WRONG. All the modern childhood vaccines give high levels of protection (80 – 95%). However, no vaccine is 100% effective and occasionally infections will still occur. When this happens after vaccination, the illness is usually considerably milder.
Homeopathic vaccines work
WRONG. Homeopathic immunisation has not been proven to be effective. Even the Medical Association for Homeopathy recommends conventional vaccines. Disclaimer:
