Are very low carbohydrate diets safe?

Based on a recent review, the Heart Foundation does not recommend very low carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins diet, for long-term weight loss. These diets are often high in saturated fats, which raise blood cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. They also lack key nutrients, such as folate, calcium and fibre. The Heart Foundation says that their safety for long-term health is unknown. Visit www.heartfoundation.com.au/index.cfm?page=41 for more information.
