At least 1.2 million Australians are currently aging in place, which means they’re living in their own homes, being supported by our aged care system. This is the preference for many: to remain in a comfortable, familiar environment while maintaining independence with basic support services. If you want to age in place and do your best to avoid moving into residential aged care, here are some crucial tips to consider:

Know Your Entitlements

Aging in place doesn’t mean living in your own home without care and assistance. You may be surprised by how many forms of support and resources are available to help you stay at home. For example, the Australian Government Support at Home program provides eligible people with access to in-home aged care services and tailored support. Receiving services, home modifications, equipment, and health support is all designed to be easier within this program.

Make Your Home Safer

Getting older means your mobility needs can change. You may also be at a greater risk of falls and require more measures to remain safe. When you intend to stay in your own home, it’s essential to make it safer to improve the chances of this happening.

Eliminate fall hazards like loose rugs, cords, and clutter. Add grab bars and handrails near stairs, showers, and toilets. You may also explore home modifications, such as a zero-step entry,  wider doorways, and a walk-in shower or tub. The more measures you have in place, the smaller the risk of incidents that cause harm and put an end to your plans of at-home independence.

Prioritise Health and Wellness

The healthier you are, the easier it often is to remain in your own home with minimal intervention. There are a number of actions you can take to improve your health and overall well-being, such as attending regular medical checkups and using pill organisers to keep on top of your medication use.

Staying active is also crucial. Participate in gentle exercises like walking, yoga, tai chi, and swimming. You can also take care of your nutritional needs by maintaining a balanced diet, rich in fibre, protein, and other crucial vitamins and minerals.

Be Social

One in five older Australians is socially isolated. In residential aged care, that figure is one-third. Prevent isolation and its associated problems by scheduling regular calls, video chats, and visits with friends and family. If there are community programs in your area, join them. Senior centres, volunteer groups, and even online communities all cater to older adults. If you no longer drive, research local senior transit or rideshare options.

Maintain Your Cognitive and Emotional Well-being

It’s not just your physical health you need to look after to successfully age in place; you also need to look after your cognitive and emotional health. Stimulate your mind by learning new skills, reading, and playing strategy games. To support your memory and reduce stress, ensure your life has a routine and structure. If you’re feeling depressed, anxious, or have other negative feelings, seek help early.

If you intend to remain in your own home for as long as possible, it’s time to build a healthy foundation for it. Take care of your physical and mental health, learn about the services and programs available to you, and turn your home into a safe haven.
